Like his studio, bathed in light from a wall of windows overlooking the warehouses, auto body shops and wholesale distributors that dot Brooklyn's industrial landscape, Matt Mignanelli's painting is an amalgam of gestural strokes and hard-edge freehand lines. His technique, which has evolved from subtle monochromatic works, often in black, grey or white, has found a starker, more abrupt palette that speaks to the expansion of his style.
With a harsher light and the subsequent shadow that emerges from his architectural geometrics, Mignanelli has imagined environments of interruption that dance with the movement and energy of his neighborhood's bustling trade. Although more explosive than his previous works which were soft interactions of light on smooth, delicately perfect bases, Minganelli has contrasted the visual sharpness of these new paintings with the intimacy of texture, drips and splashes. Nevertheless, while he embraces the spontaneity of these organic gestures he remains committed to painting the areas of geometry freehand for it is in his seemingly perfect lines that the vibrations and imperfections of the human hand are recognized and appreciated.
